Humane Society SB 460

HSUS SB 460 Lurz

June 2, 2010

S.L. Lurz joined fellow animal rights advocates in Raleigh, NC to meet with state representatives regarding SB 460. NC does not currently have statewide laws to regulate puppy mills. SB 460 would provide for the humane treatment of these animals while helping to prevent the irresponsible mass production of them. Miss Stanly records song
CNHI

Sunday, May 30, 2010 — Miss Stanly County Shelly Burris of Richfield has her hands full these days as she prepares to represent her home in the Miss North Carolina Pageant. In addition to this, she continually seeks her passion for animal rescue and singing through one unique opportunity.

Nestled in the mountains in the town of Ferguson, author Susan Lurz wrote a song titled, “Running With The Horses,” which is based on her experiences after rescuing a pony a few years back. The rescue prompted Lurz, who has written a number of short stories and poems, to become passionate about animal rescue. As she travels and represents the Stallion to Gelding Support group (SGS), which is designed to help end equine suffering throughout the U.S., Lurz wanted some meaningful music to accompany her video presentations. After writing the song, she went on a search to locate the perfect voice to express the sentiment described in her lyrics.

She contacted Fred Story with Concentrix Music and Sound Design, who suggested Burris for the job. Story served as a judge for WSOC-TV’s “Gimme The Mike! Charlotte” singing competition in 2008, of which Burris participated in, finishing as first runner-up. Burris laid down the vocals for the song on May 22 to the delight of Lurz and her business partner, Kristan Kostur, both choosing Burris from among the audition tapes they heard.

“When we heard Shelly’s voice, we knew she was the singer we wanted,” Lurz said.

“We are so happy to have met her and we have a great synergy together.”

Lurz will use the song during her speaking engagements as she prepares for the release of her first book, also the first out of a series of six titled, “Sweetwater Animal Society: The Hidden Mountain.”

The book, which is categorized as children’s action-adventure, places an emphasis on animal rescue, and will be released July 23. In addition to this, Lurz anticipates flying Burris in to some of her future commissions to perform the song live.

The Dream of Stallion to Gelding Support
By S.L. Lurz

Stallion To Gelding Support, a program designed to give free gelding services to qualified applicants has been a dream of the Horse Protection Society of North Carolina for the past ten years. Finally, the dream came true when SGS was launched in January 2009. Through the years the Horse Protection Society has witnessed the suffering of horses caused by the growing problem of equine overpopulation. Our goal at SGS is to try to alleviate the suffering of those wonderful horses by finding a humane approach to this issue.

Our country has been spaying and neutering dogs and cats as a form of animal control for many years—why not for horses? Would this not be the best solution to this growing problem? There are those who believe that euthanasia is the only alternative. It’s an interesting thing we do as humans—deciding if another living being is worthy of life.

So, Horse Protection Society had a dream and now I have a dream—to prevent the suffering of horses before it even has a chance to begin. Since starting SGS, I have heard from people all over the country—some in support of our cause and others who believe that slaughter and euthanasia are the only ways to end the overpopulation issue. Due to spay/neuter programs you only have to look at the declining numbers of euthanized dogs and cats over the last ten years to know that SGS can work.

It is time to find new ways to better manage our animals. It is time to create awareness about what is going on in our country regarding slaughter and euthanasia. It is time to change our thinking from the devastation of death to the beauty of life. And at SGS…we have a dream.
